Bali Wheelchair Basketball League
Wheelchair basketball is now rolling at Bali International School (BIS) every Wednesday night, part of BSF Asia’s (BSF) program on Integrated Sports whereby able and disabled athletes compete in on level playing field in a variety of sports, like wheelchair basketball and blind soccer ,so abled bodied athletes can appreciate what it is like to live with disabilities and BIS’s IB students community program.
Considered one of the major disabled sports ,wheelchair basketball was developed from its origins of WWII American disabled veterans playing in rehab ,it has spread though out the world played in at least 82 countries with almost 100,000 players (both able and disabled),governed by the the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation.
In Bali, wheelchair basketball was introduced by BSF Asia at the 2013 ParaGames, with training and introduction clinics by Singaporian Paralympians.Wheelchair basketball retains the most of the major rules and scoring of basketball. The basket and ring is the same height,as is the size of the basketball court .The exceptions are the rules which have been modified with consideration to the wheelchairs to do with dribbling and travel. The special sports wheelchairs themselves have features to avoid falling backwards, withstand contact and increased stability.
Since the ParaGames,BSF has held weekly pick up games on Saturday mornings at BSF Sportshall, and now the tempo has picked up with the commencement of the Bali Wheelchair Basketball league with the cooperation of BIS coordinated by teachers Ted Wilson and Hamish Sutherland .Teams competing include a team from PUSPADI Bali,Mitrais,BIS and Stiff Chilli. Athletes are a mix of disabled and able players.( see http://www.balibasketball.com)
The league is free and open to anyone able or disabled ,male or female .
