WADA – Walk to Assist Disabled Athletes BSF Asia Fundraising Event
On July 15 this year BSF Asia trustee Vicki Spencer will set off on a 100k walk around Eastern Bali to raise awareness of people living with a disability and to raise money to support disabled athletes and their quest to compete in the Bali Paragames. The walk will commence in Nusa Dua and take in areas such as Jimbaran, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Sanur, Ubud, Gianyar, Klungkung, Candidasa and Amlapura. It will cover over 100k in four days with at lease 25K being covered each day.
People living with a disability are often seen as disadvantaged, however they are often more inspirational than able bodied people. What they experience and live with on a daily basis is their normality, yet they mostly remain positive with a belief that anything is possible. There are many opportunities for able bodied athletes to participate in sport in Bali and Indonesia but very little for those living with a disability. In 2013 BSF Asia, with the support of sponsors organised the first Bali Paragames, the first of it’s kind anywhere in Indonesia. The Paragames gave disabled athletes the opportunity to compete in a friendly environment and the performances of each one was inspiring in it’s own right. Anyone who was privileged enough to witness these performances could not come away from the Paragames without feeling inspired.
An excellent example of what can be achieved when disabled athletes are given opportunities to pursue their selected sports is Ni Nengah Widiasih, from Karangasem, who won gold at the South East Asian Para games recently! Imagine what can be achieved if more athletes get the opportunity to compete more and the Bali Paragames is a perfect platform for this to happen.
In 2014, BSF Asia is seeking support to again allow disabled athletes to compete and further inspire all those who are fortunate enough to witness their performances. The WADA, Walk to Assist Disabled Athletes, aims to ensure those games can go ahead without relying solely on corporate sponsorship!
